New Tactile maps, 3d models of the Theatre’s halls, as well as audioguides for the blind and videoguides for the deaf are now available to enance a richer experience of the opera-house. A delegation of representatives from the Institute of the Deaf in Turin, Italy, and researchers from the University of Nitra in Slovakia, visited the Teatro Massimo in Palermo yesterday, experiencing firsthand the new devices for the blind and hard of hearing that are now available inside the opera-house.
These include audio guides in Italian and English, with detailed descriptions for the blind, video guides in Italian Sign Language (LIS), American Sign Language (ASL), and International Signs (IS), with video descriptions of the tour routes accessible to deaf people.
New 3D models are now on display to get a better idea of what the whole opera-house and the main halls look like, together with Braille texts in Italian and English.
The new devices have been financed by the PNRR Funds offered by the Italian Ministry of Culture’s notice. The funding aimed at making public cultural venues accessible to people with disabilities, according to principles of non-discrimination and equal opportunity, removing physical, cognitive and sensory barriers.
